Solomon Schechter Day School prides itself on the variety of physical opportunities available to our students and our ongoing commitment to expanding our athletic programming.

Our athletic departments offer students the opportunity to participate in life-long physical fitness activities.  Both campuses feature full-size gymnasiums, inviting playgrounds, and playing fields. Beginning in Pre-K, students participate in gym classes every week where they learn age-appropriate sports and skills (including volleyball, roller-skating and more) in a fun setting.

Students in the higher grades have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Intramurals (within school) including: mini-golf, golf instruction, badminton, bowling, basketball, floor hockey, table tennis, volleyball, and softball. Intramurals provide an additional opportunity to hone skills while participating in athletic activities. Students work to improve their knowledge of the rules, skills, and nuances in a wide variety of individual and team sports.

Inter-scholastics (competition with other schools) include: soccer, 7th/8th grade basketball, and track. Soccer and track are open to all grades, and we offer coed teams. Schechter competes with local private and public middle schools, and is a proud founding member of the Great Lakes Schechter Showdown competition. The Showdown is a basketball tournament for Schechter schools from Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Toronto.

A major goal of our sports program is to be promote sportsmanship and team-building through role modeling and demonstration. We are proud to have won the Sportsmanship Award at a recent Schechter Showdown. Our athletic teams provide an additional opportunity for middle school students to work on relationships on and off the court, relate to adults as coaches, spectators, referees, and learn to work with peers as teammates and opponents.

Being on a Schechter team requires each athlete to take on the responsibility to represent our school in a way that reflects the values, practices, and beliefs of Solomon Schechter. Athletes are expected to display respect toward opponents, referees, teammates, coaches, and facilities. Our coaches instill a love of the game and pride of accomplishment as individuals and as a team.

When I Think Of Schechter
When I think of Schechter, I think of my home, a place I feel comfortable and secure, a place where I feel accepted and understood, a place where I feel educated, and I place where I feel loved. Nothing can compare to the feeling that Schechter provides.
