Beyond Academics

At Schechter, social and emotional learning and our whole child approach help children build the skills, capacities, and confidence they need to thrive in school and life. Every school day, we dedicate time and space in the classroom and beyond to teach and model these essential life skills. We also provide students with countless opportunities to unleash their creativity, move their bodies, gain musical and athletic skills, and actively engage in experiential learning.

Homeroom Community: Kehillah

Several years ago, we restructured our schedule so that Kindergarten through 8th grade students can begin each day in their homeroom community, known as their Kehillah. This is a safe space for students to ease into their day, build relationships with their classmates and Kehillah teacher, and practice social and emotional skills – including empathy, kindness, perspective taking, active listening, and mindfulness. Students consistently tell us their time in Kehillah helps them to bring their best selves into the school day.

Many things make being a Schechter student special: we are a K-8 school that values Tribes activities across the grades, we have a special that lets us interact with Keshet students, we start studying Talmud, we go to Washington, our musical is partially in Hebrew and we have a coed soccer team.
